Famous Redheads - Political A- L

Paddy Ashdown

Born 27th Feb 1941. MP for Yeovil since 1983, and leader of the Liberal Democrats from 1988-1999.
Likeable free-thinker who has passed the baton of leadership onto another Redhead. Good move.

Michela Brambilla

Michela Vittoria Brambilla Born Calolziocorte, Italy October 26, 1967. Italian politician and businesswoman touted as a successor to Silvio Berlusconi for leadership of the Italian right.
On August 21st 2007 she set up the new Liberty Party apparently with his blessing, the goal of which is to merge the right wing allies of Berlusconi.

Herbert Asquith

1852-1928. Born in Morley, Yorkshire. Became Liberal MP for East Fife in 1886. Became Chancellor of The Exchequer then Prime Minister and head of the Liberal Party.

Barbara Castle

Born October 6 1910, died May 3 2002. Feisty, no-nonsense veteran of Harold Wilson’s 1960s Labour Government.
Her claim to fame was, as Minister of Transport, introducing the breathalyser in 1967, and being a leading campaigner in getting equal pay for women. Won a European MP seat in 1979 aged 69 years.  Took her seat in the House of Lords in 1989, taking the title Baroness Castle of Blackburn. Still liable to show the young New Labour pups how it was done until her death aged 91.

Sir Winston Churchill

1874-1965.  If it wasn’t for Winston, we’d all be walking round wearing lederhosen and eating saeurkraut. The greatest of all Prime Ministers, Winston epitomised the British Bulldog Spirit, uniting the country during the dark days of World War II.

  Sir Winston Churchill

Robin Cook

Born 28th February 1946, Belshill, Scotland. Foreign Secretary of HM Government. Proved that brains can count over looks, liaising with his er… ‘Parliamentary Assistant’. Only one problem; our Rob was married at the time. Subsequently, a messy separation from wife Margaret raged in the tabloids. He was nastily referred to (among other things) as a ‘gnome’ - but kept his political career in one piece, before resigning over the 2003 Iraq War, simultaneously taking a backward career move, but winning much respect - especially during an emotionally charged resignation speech in Parliament - for standing up for his principles.

Doug Henderson

Born 9th June 1949, Edinburgh. Labour MP for Newcastle-Upon-Tyne North since 1987. Prior to entering politics, Doug  worked as a Trades Union Office. Appointed as Armed Forces Minister in late 2003.

Charles Kennedy

Charles Kennedy. Born 25th November 1959 Inverness. Attended Glasgow University, graduating in 1982. Worked as a journalist and broadcaster with BBC Highlands before attending Indiana University, returning in 1983 when the opportunity arose to seek the SDP nomination for Ross, Cromarty and Skye. Elected to The House of Commons in 1983, becoming the youngest MP of the time. Became Party President in 1994, elected leader of the SDP in August 1999. Forced to resign as LibDem leader in January 2006 after admitting to having treatment for alcoholism. A witty, intelligent politician (somewhat of a rarity these days) Charles is a regular on TV and radio. Voted Red and Proud's Redhead of the Year 2003.

Neil Kinnock

Not much left of it now, true, but the best Prime Minister this country never had wore a fine head of the Right Stuff during his reign as Labour Party leader.

  Neil Kinnock

Alina Lebedeva

Feisty Latvian Redhead who attacked Prince Charles in Riga on Thursday 8th November 2001 during a walkabout after he had visited the country's War Memorial. Alina hit Charles about the head with a bunch of flowers.  "I'm protesting about Latvia joining NATO and I'm against the war in Afghanistan" said Alina before being led away by Police.

Lenin

Born Vladimir Ilrich Ulyanov 22nd April 1870-21st January 1924. Has any other Redhead had such an impact on the World?
Instigator of the October Revolution and first leader of the Soviet Government, Lenin was a master of Realpolitik and main architect of the Soviet Union. It’s not just a coincidence that the Russian flag is red, you know.
